How can fragrance families assist in selecting the perfect perfume?

Because our sense of smell is deeply tied to emotions, fragrances can often seem overwhelming and chaotic, with countless scents appearing random and unorganised. However, this perception is misleading. When you categorise the fragrances you’ve worn, you’ll likely find they mainly fall into just two or three scent families. Once you identify the families you prefer, the FM catalogue will help you explore more fragrances within those same groups.

Is it accurate to say that each person possesses their own unique ‘scent fingerprint’?

Indeed, this statement holds true. The uniqueness stems from the fact that nearly everyone has distinct skin chemistry, influenced by factors like genetics and diet. When perfumes are applied, the fragrance oils interact with the natural oils on our skin, causing the same perfume to smell different on each person.

Is it accurate to say that fragrances react differently on individuals with different hair colours such as blondes, brunettes, and redheads?

Yes, that statement is accurate, although hair color is not the main factor. The key element is the individual’s skin type. Generally, people with naturally blonde or red hair tend to have drier skin, while those with darker hair often have oilier skin. This difference causes perfumes to react uniquely with their skin, resulting in variations in fragrance. To enhance a perfume’s longevity, it is essential to keep the skin well-hydrated. Applying a moisturising body lotion after showering before spritzing the perfume can greatly extend its lasting power on the skin.

How long should a good quality perfume last?

The longevity of a high-quality perfume varies from person to person. Generally, a perfume—the most concentrated form—lasts between six to eight hours. In contrast, an eau de parfum usually stays noticeable for three to four hours, though it can last longer if it contains a higher concentration of fragrance oils.

AVOID RUBBING YOUR WRISTS TOGETHER!

This common error increases skin temperature, causing the top note fragrance molecules to break down and evaporate rapidly. Consequently, the middle and base notes emerge too soon, creating a misleading impression of the scent.
